Local rankings change block by block. A geo-grid shows exactly where customers can, and cannot, find you.
Ask three people in three different neighbourhoods to search “coffee shop” and you will probably get three different maps. Local rankings depend on the searcher's location, so a single number from a single point is misleading.
What is a geo-grid?
A geo-grid places a grid of search points around your business (for example 7×7 points across a two-mile area) and records your Maps ranking at each. Colours show where you rank first, in the top three, or not at all.
How to use the heat map
- Spot dead zones where a competitor dominates your neighbourhood
- Measure the impact of changes such as new categories or review pushes
- Compare your grid with a competitor's to find what they do better
- Prioritise keywords whose grids are mostly green but leaking at the edges
